Bush: Redcoats in BDUs?

July 5th, 2007 by Steve

Like Rudy Giuliani, the president just doesn’t get it. From WaPo:

President Bush warned Wednesday that the Iraq war “will require more patience, more courage and more sacrifice,” as he appealed to a war-weary public for time and sought to link today’s conflict to the storied battles that gave birth to the nation. [snip]

The president, who was accompanied by senior adviser Karl Rove, began his remarks by comparing today’s soldiers to those who fought in the Revolutionary War.

The president mentioned Adam Stephen, a Revolutionary War general who founded Martinsburg, a city of 15,000 in the panhandle of West Virginia. “We give thanks for all the brave citizen-soldiers of our Continental Army who dropped pitchforks and took up muskets to fight for our freedom and liberty and independence,” Bush said. He added: “You’re the successors of those brave men. . . . Like those early patriots, you’re fighting a new and unprecedented war.”

While I’m no professional historian, my recollection is that we were fighting foreign oppressors on our own turf as our country was founded. Iraqis are now fighting foreign oppressors (and each other, of course) on their own home turf. It seems that Bush is trying to turn our once defensive military into the Redcoats.

The whole concept of unreasonable search and seizure was based on British troop abuses. As far as I can tell there’s an unrestricted use of search and seizure in Iraq by American soldiers.

Nice to see you really blogging again Gordo . . . gotcha ya on my blogroll now too. Thanks for your work at LPHQ.

Nice stretch guys…if the state party is going this way too then maybe I need to bail. This has been my beef with the National Party, we sound like MoveOn.org, disagree on Constitutional grounds (plenty of room there) but stop trying to outtop the fanatics ok?

Declared war or not, Joe is fighting a war over there. The restrictions are onerous enough to those doing the fighting. Comparing our troops to British redcoats fighting to maintain inperial control over fellow Englishmen seems a bit of a stretch. Saying Iraq is a case of overt imperialism is another.

Chuck, please read again. I said, emphasis added, “It seems that Bush is trying to turn our once defensive military into the Redcoats”.

As a veteran of over a decade in the Army, I have nothing but respect for our troops. I actually have some family members over there now.

My opposition is towards Bush and a messed up foreign policy, not towards our men and women in uniform.

    What stretch? It’s the truth.

Imperialism is as imperialism does. Duh.
