DC’s mayor still opposes right of self-defense

July 16th, 2007 by Steve

The DC government’s attitude about gun control is one of many reasons why I’m glad I moved back to Alabama. In the latest example, Mayor Fenty hopes to get the U.S. Supreme Court to disregard the Constitution. In so doing, he’ll use taxpayer dollars to deprive people of their natural rights. From WaPo:

D.C. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty announced today that the city will appeal to the Supreme Court to uphold a long-time ban on handguns that was overturned by a lower court in March.

“The handgun ban has saved many lives and will continue to do so if it remains in effect,” Fenty said at a morning news conference.

In a 2-1 decision, a panel of judges for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit found three months ago that the city’s prohibition against residents keeping handguns in their homes is unconstitutional. In May, the full appeals court declined a petition from the city to reconsider the panel’s decision.

I don’t know what lives Fenty is talking about, but my point-of-view is quite the opposite. In the last year, I witnessed a daylight mugging in DC from my condo balcony that I could have easily prevented if I had been legally able to take some of my Alabama firearms into the district. Of course, Mayor Fenty thinks it’s better for people to get assaulted than to be able to defend themselves.

In fairness to the Mayor, he’s using taxpayer dollars to defend a law passed by their representative government. Yes, I believe that law is unconstitutional, but it is his obligation to try to defend it.

My fear was that he wouldn’t appeal to the Supreme Court and we’d be left with an even bigger circuit split on the Second Amendment.
