Nominee for The List

August 17th, 2007 by Steve

Kyle Whitmire has a list, appropriately named The List, over at the Birmingham Weekly blog. It is for…

“…the jackals and jackasses who have made Alabama and Birmingham a worse place in which to live, who have betrayed their constituents and fellow citizens. Their indiscretions border on the unforgivable.”

I’ve got a special nominee for The List: The entire Alabama congressional delegation!

The charge? Pork. Pork. And more pork.

According to Citizens Against Government Waste, only one of our alleged Representatives was even remotely responsible with our federal tax dollars. Here’s how they break out the Alabama delegation (0% is the worst rating, 100% is the best):

  • 18% - Robert Aderholt
  • 39% - Spencer Bachus
  • 27% - Josiah Bonner
  • 16% - Bud Cramer
  • 14% - Artur Davis
  • 55% - Terry Everett
  • 23% - Mike Rogers

An additional potential nominee might be the person who conceived the “Take Back Our Highways” campaign.

Interesting nomination, but how do you define waste? What constitutes pork is often in the eye of the beholder. Several years ago, Sen. John McCain decried the federal tax dollars that Sen. Shelby directed to the Vulcan restoration as the most egregious pork project in America, but what does that symbol mean to Birmingham? I’m interested to see some examples of our delegations’ pork projects and then hear whether Alabamians think they are wasteful.
