What Fred Thompson and I Have in Common
September 6th, 2007 by Steve
I was born in Sheffield, AL. So was Fred Thompson. The similarity ends about there.
I support the First Amendment. Fred Thompson supports the McCain-Feingold Act. While I find the burning of the American flag deplorable, it’s an act of political speech and protected by the First Amendment. Fred Thompson has voted to outlaw flag burning.
I support a strong national defense. I support our troops by working hard to bring them back from Iraq — alive. Thompson supports an offensive military posture and if he’s elected president, more of our troops will needlessly die.
I think sex education should be up to parents. Fred Thompson voted yes for federal expenditures for abstinence education.
I don’t think your tax dollars should be used to fund the National Endowment for the Arts. Thompson does.
I believe Medical Savings Accounts are a step in the right direction. Fred Thompson doesn’t.
I’d recommend that people start looking at where Fred Thompson stands on the issues before cheerleading too loudly for him.

So, other than those things you two must be just about identical!
The GOP is so demoralized (in more ways than one it seems at times) that they yearn for Fred simply because they think he can win, not because they think his policies are sound.

Brian,
I am not a good actor, either. Forgot to bring that one up.
I know the GOP is demoralized, but it is their own doing. They could have paid attention to principle in the years following their 1994 electoral gain — but instead decided winning was more important than being right.
If they nominate Fred for those same reasons, I’ll suggest that the GOP will continue to decline, for the same reasons.

Steve,
I concur with Brian, the only thing they seem to like about Thompson is that they think he can win. It does not appear to be about taking logical positions or making important decisions or speaking truth - it’s all about “red team/blue team” - the red team is ONLY interested in winning. Those who have core principles have already/or will be defecting over to the Good Dr.

titaniumgirl, Republicans may be right about Thompson’s having the best chance of any member of their party being elected, but for all the wrong reasons. Steve listed some reasons Thompson shouldn’t be elected, but the primary reasons I could never vote for him are [1] his membership in the Council on Foreign Relations, and [2] his statement recorded on YouTube @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXevDajb2lo claiming that he had no idea that the CFR was “up to that” when he was asked why he was a member of an organization that was forming the North American Union (which for all practical purposes will destroy the sovereignty of the USA) and how can he call himself a conservative as a member of the CFR.

I should add to my prior comment, that one of the reasons Thompson could be elected IS HIS BEING A MEMBER OF THE CFR. The CFR’s influence on mainstream media and both major parties is nothing to be ignored.

Don,
I hear that, and it’s just another reason why I’m not a fan of “Fred”. He simply is not original. If he won’t we would just get at least 4 more years of “same old same old”. The Red Staters are using Hillary as their “threat” I say, bring her on - I won’t be selecting the lesser of any evils.
I’m a big fan of the “none of the above” option.
If Ron Paul doesn’t get the nominatin we will be forced to vote for a Giant Douche or a Turd Sandwich or we could be smart and not vote at all or vote libertarian.

titaniumgirl, after reading your last comment I’m gonna’ have to check out you and your blog to see what you have to say there. :-)

You say you support a strong Military and a strong Defense. Yet, you want to bring them all home from Afghanistan and Iraq.
If you don’t forsee them having any role in fighting Radical Muslims, than what exactly is the role for our Military?
If they can’t fight Radical Islamists than who can they fight?
Mexicans trying to sneak across our borders maybe?

How about no one?
The strongest military is the one that never has to be used.
While you’re at it, the strongest military is the one that people will pay for voluntarily, without tax extortion. Radical concept, but there you have it.
