Did Newt Gingrich Just Endorse Ron Paul?
September 14th, 2007 by Steve
It should come as no surprise that Romney and Giuliani supported the president’s Iraq speech:
Mitt Romney, former Massachusetts governor: President Bush understands that our most crucial objective in Iraq is to make sure it does not become a safe haven for al-Qaeda and Jihadist terrorists. But that’s just what would happen if Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and John Edwards have their way. Our troop presence has emboldened Sunni leaders to resist al-Qaeda. This is progress – important progress.
Rudy Giuliani, former mayor of New York City: I thought the president was correct to follow General Petraeus’s recommendations. … it seems to me that our goal in Iraq is no different now than it was at the very beginning. The goal, the mission in Iraq is to provide safety and security so we can have an ally in Iraq against the Islamic terrorists. That was the mission that most of the Democrats agreed to in 2003. They’ve kind of changed their minds about that.
Hillary and Obama provided the usual blather we hear from that side of the aisle. Newt Gingrich offered some rational advice for the Republican presidential wannabes:
Republican presidential candidates need to make a “clean break” from President George W. Bush and the U.S. government or they will lose in November 2008, a veteran Republican leader said on Friday.
“If you don’t represent real change, you just gave away the 2008 election,” said former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who led the Republican takeover of the House of Representatives in 1994 and now is flirting with a White House run.
Gingrich cited the Iraq war, the failed federal response to Hurricane Katrina two years ago and the inability to control U.S. borders and illegal immigration as evidence of a need for a complete overhaul of the U.S. system of governing.
“Now that may or may not make the White House happy. But I think that’s the whole point about making a clean break,” Gingrich told a group of reporters over breakfast.
He added: “I believe for any Republican to win in 2008 they have to … offer a dramatic, bold change. If we nominate somebody who has not done that, they get to be the nominee but there is very, very little likelihood that they can win.”
There is but one of the GOP presidential hopefuls following the Gingrich plan. While they may differ on nuances, all but one of the Republican candidates support the war in Iraq. Most openly support torture and our continued disregard for civil liberties. There are only a small handful of them dealing with immigration in a manner Gingrich would find acceptable. There is only one of them offering a clean break from the entire spectrum of failed GOP policies: Ron Paul.
While I’m sure it wasn’t his intent, it almost seems that Newt just endorsed Ron Paul’s bid to become the next president of the United States. Even if he doesn’t agree with Dr. Paul on the issues, he seems to be saying that Ron Paul is the only GOP presidential candidate with a chance to win the general election.

It would be quite a coup if Newt came around. He is part of the CFR crowd, though, who are just salivating over the potential war with Iran, so I wouldn’t hold your breath. He is, at least, pretty smart. I think he knows Fred and Rudy and Romney are all full of crap.

Newt is a very smart guy politically, and he can read the tea leaves here. The interesting dynamic to wonder about is this: how many Republicans are going to realize that the party is doomed in the general election without Paul as the candidate?
They HAVE to realize by now that the “Iraq” and “Patriot Act” issues have both created a politcal shift among normal voters that will benefit whoever is the biggest “change” candidate.
Sadly, it’s shaping up to be a guaranteed “President Hillary Clinton” (shudder).
Of course, if Newt DID actually endorse Paul, I fear that Sean Hannity will have an immediate aneurism on the air. We should protect him from the news for a day or two.

Newt is only pushing for himself and patting himself on the back. He is a CFR goober. Hell will freeze over when any CFR nut endorses Paul.

An endorsement by Newt is a good thing?

Look for Newt to enter the race with the Ron Paul platform. He will try to take Ron Pauls support and if elected will NOT do any of it. The Fed Res./ IRS are getting worried, they need a candidate that says most of what Paul does to take his votes.

Don’t kid yourself, Newt is just another one of the political elite. He won’t endorse Paul and Paul doesn’t need his endorsement. Paul has the endorsement of the people, young and old, left and right. We are going to win this election through hard work and here in the Dallas Metroplex we are working our tails off. A they are doing he same in New Hampshire, New York, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Illinois, Michigan, California, Arizona… yes, all over the country, the revolution is gaining traction. Don’t take a breather, follow Paul’s example and keep going, relentlessly.

Albert,
That was snarkasm, not seriously suggesting that Newt was going to endorse Paul.
