Neoprohibition Updates
October 19th, 2007 by Steve
I should have known better than to have a couple of drinks while I was out last night. For each drink I ordered, I received a link relating to the relationship between government and alcohol.
The first one came from an old HoT coblogger informing me of a new website about neoprohibitionism, with the appropriate URL of www.neoprohibition.com. It’s sponsored by the American Beverage Institute and I’ll be checking it out from time to time.
The second was a trackback from Punditry by the Pint, where the South’s madman raises a pertinent issue:
Slate’s Explainer asks: Why is Moonshine illegal? Oh yeah, now I remember:
Because the liquor is worth more to the government than beer or wine. Uncle Sam takes an excise tax of $2.14 for each 750-milliliter bottle of 80-proof spirits, compared with 21 cents for a bottle of wine (of 14 percent alcohol or less) and 5 cents for a can of beer.
If I have three drinks tonight, I wonder if I’ll get three prohibition-related e-mails.
