Stephen Colbert Supporters May End Up Having to Support Ron Paul

The Self-Proclaimed Expert brings up a valid point:

You see, you can’t just announce you are running for the presidency and remain on a national televsion network; in short, this is called an unfair advantage/endorsement. It would be a completely different story if he was joking about running and just saying it to rile people up. However, he is making his campaign more and more official everyday since his announcement on his Comedy Central TV talk show “The Colbert Report.”

When I managed Aaron Russo’s presidential campaign, we considered developing (and were in talks about) placing Russo on a national television reality show about the presidential race. Vegas oddsmaker and Libertarian Party hopeful Wayne Allyn Root is currently in the same boat, and I expect the reason he hasn’t made a formal announcement is because of campaign finance implications if he’s in this (scroll down around 25 percent of the page) show.

The FEC frowns about someone being on a television show while running for president. Keep in mind that Republicans are as much responsible for the Bipartisan Campaign Finance Act as Democrats are. The original bill included two current GOP presidential candidates and was initially called McCain-Feingold-Thompson. To the best of my knowledge, the key Democratic contenders (unless some wind of which I’m unaware has started shifting) still favor this assault on First Amendment and Article II of the Constitution.

Of course, there is a reasonable solution. By supporting Ron Paul, Colbert supporters can make their voices heard by voting for a man who would get rid of the blatantly unconstitutional Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act.

Colbert for President! I love the guy and even though he’s wacky and wierd, he’d be better than any of the other candidates.
