Alabama Spreading STDs to Mississippi and Tennessee

November 19th, 2007 by Steve

Like some nasty venereal disease, Alabama’s Take Back Our Highways campaign continues to erupt anew, leaving pustules of tickets along the public roads in our state. For those not from Alabama, this is a zero-tolerance campaign where cops are pulling people over for every imaginable and imaginary infraction possible. During the last eruption of this STD (State Trooper Inflicted Disease), thousands and thousands of tickets were issued, many to people going as little as one mile over the speed limit.

Alabamians no longer merely suffer from the government inflicted STD, but we are spreading it to other states. According to this report, we’ve now infected the states of Mississippi and Tennessee.

All available state troopers will be on patrol through Sunday in a joint effort of the Mississippi Highway Patrol and its sister agencies in Alabama and Tennessee.

“In our changing society, it has become clear that we must work together with our counterparts across state lines to make our roads and highways safer and to ensure an enjoyable Thanksgiving holiday,” said Col. Michael Berthay, MHP director.

My turkey and cranberry sauce will be much more enjoyable without a helping of tickets for a burned out license tag bulbs or excessive factory window tinting, thank you.

Some foreshadowing to my neighbors in Tennessee and Mississippi: The media will continue to report this program as a good thing. It would be refreshing if some media outlet highlighted the negative aspects, too.

In the meantime, Birmingham is once again the nation’s sixth most dangerous city. But don’t waste your time calling the cops if someone tries to rape, rob or murder you. The police will be busy on the side of the road writing tickets to people who drove three miles over the speed limit.

Is there any confirmation that people were getting ticketed for going 1 mile over the limit? I heard rumors on the local news but never confirmed it.

Look at it on the bright side. If we all challenge our tickets (most of us would probably win unless we actually deserved a ticket), it gives us a way to make the government spend more money than they take in during the campaign. I’m doing my part (still awaiting trial).

    Dan,

The only confirmation I have came from blogs and the news. I do know two people who got zapped for three miles over, though.

Got a friend who’s daughter is taking it to trial, too. I’ve been lucky, so far. Good luck!
