GOP Logic: A Win Isn’t Really a Win

December 4th, 2007 by Steve

Ron Paul has won or placed well in so many GOP straw poll victories around the country that I don’t generally find them newsworthy any more.  However, I found this statement pertaining to a recent straw poll victory amusing (emphasis added):

Republican officials dismissed the poll’s outcome, noting that Paul has been concentrating on winning straw polls all over the country.

“He brought people in here. What is more critical to look at is who finished second and third. That is a more true indicator of the feelings of the Republican Party of Virginia,” said Tucker Watkins of Randolph in Charlotte County, a former 5th District GOP chairman.

Additionally, the paper had to print a retraction about Paul bringing people into the straw poll:

Editor’s note: The following correction appeared in Monday’s Times-Dispatch. The online version of the story below has been changed to correct the error.

Supporters of Texas Rep. Ron Paul drove on their own and paid their way to participate in a presidential straw poll at the 24th annual Republican Advance during the weekend in Arlington County, said Dennis Fusaro, Paul’s national field director. A story on Page B1 in Sunday’s paper incorrectly reported that Paul bused in supporters.

The true feelings of the Republican Party of Virginia? Who is he to say who the Republican Party of Virginia is? It’s the people who show up at the polls, and so far, Ron Paul has done a pretty good job of motivating people to get out there and do things for him.
