Today is Repeal Day. Enjoy!

“May stipenders and pensioners never sit in an American senate.” — popular American toast in 1776
Despite the fact that liberals are increasing taxes and conservatives are prohibiting sex toys, Alabamians (limited to certain counties) have something to celebrate today: Repeal Day.
Tom brings our attention to this video produced by my friends at Bureaucrash reminding us of a wide variety of silly things that various levels of government are prohibiting today.
If you’re in Alabama, today is an appropriate day to donate a few bucks to one of my favorite local causes: Free the Hops. If you aren’t from Alabama (or have tons of extra money on hand), Tom also links to what I’d consider the perfect Christmas gift. Just drop me a line and I’ll let you know the proper shipping address.
In the spirit of those who continue to fight the nanny state prohibition mentality, tip back one or two of your favorite beverages today. I’m sure our Founding Fathers would have approved.

Thanks for the links, Steve. I ran across tobacco-flavored alcohol awhile back, in this article on Absinthe, but didn’t remember it until today when I looked it up while telling Shaun about Ted Breaux. I’m intrigued by both Jacob’s concoction and the Perique mentioned in the article. Next year, we Bama liberty bloggers should have our own repeal day celebration, complete with tobacco-infused liquor and vice versa. I’m sure Free the Hops would be on board.

Tom,
I’m game and know several bloggers and others who will certainly be on board.

Hey Steve,
I notice you’ve got a video posted about the San Francisco Board of Supervisors ban on certain stores using non-biodegradable plastic bags. I thought your readers might like to hear a little anecdote related to that. I live in SF, and a few weeks ago I was in Walgreens buying a few items and I noticed that the assistant manager who was ringing me up was bagging my items was double-bagging everything. Now I don’t believe in government-mandated recycling and conservation and that kind of thing, but I still try to be mindful of personally not using more resources than necessary, so I told him I didn’t need the extra bags, because the stuff wasn’t that heavy. He proceeded to explain that these were the new bio-degradable bags they’d started using since the ordinance went through, and they rip more easily than the old bags. He showed me by using a fingernail to tear a hole in one without much effort. I commented that this was a classic case of regulations having unintended consequences — now they are apparently using more bags, which, biodegradable or not, take more resources to produce. He said that was exactly what has happened — since the ordinance went into effect, he estimated that they’ve been using 20 to 30 percent more bags due to increased double-bagging and more bags tearing and having to be thrown out. Score another one for the environmental geniuses on our Board of Supervisors.
