Governor Riley Plans Winter Vacation on Your Dime

Would you be willing to pay money out of your own pocket to send Governor Riley and a handful of his cronies to play golf in Hawaii in the middle of the winter? It doesn’t matter if you’re willing, because you are paying anyway. From al.com:

Gov. Bob Riley and other state officials are headed to Hawaii to recruit industry for Alabama.

Economic development recruiters from the state will be in Maui beginning Jan. 2 for an event they call “Sweet Home Alabama.”

It’s a promotion that highlights Alabama as an industrial site. And it coincides with the Mercedes-Benz Championship golf tournament in Maui.

The event has been held at the Renaissance Ross Bridge Golf Resort and Spa in Hoover in recent years. But officials decided to change the location and move it to Hawaii because of the state’s ties to Mercedes.

I might not be so critical if this winter trip was to some location in say, North Dakota. However, golf and fun in the Pacific sun doesn’t seem to meet this writer’s expectations of frugal stewardship of the taxpayer’s money.

   Our the front page in this Sunday paper in the Atlanta Journal www.ajc.com has article on goverment misuse of taxpayer money with state credit cards. Millions of dollars. I bet no ones goes to jail over it.

   I won’t be surprised if it’s warmer here in Alabama than Hawaii in January. Besides, doesn’t the article say corporate sponsors are paying?
