Montgomery Independent Editor Endorses Ron Paul
January 3rd, 2008 by Steve
Bill Rice is the managing editor of the Montgomery Independent. From al.com:
Well, I’ve finally decided it’s time to put my two cents where my convictions are. It’s time to practice what I’ve been preaching in all the political and government columns I’ve written through the years. It’s time to raise my hand and say, “Yes, I’m one of the so-called kooks’ who has joined the Ron Paul Revolution.’ ”
Earlier this fall, I took the first plunge and donated $50 to the Ron Paul presidential campaign.
At the time, I wasn’t even sure I was going to vote for the obstetrician congressman from Texas (nicknamed “Dr. No” in Congress because of his No votes on practically every spending bill). I just greatly admired the fact that here seemed to be a politician who told us what he really believed in and was refreshingly indifferent to whether his message earned him more votes or jibed with “conventional wisdom” or political correctness.
Such a rare candidate deserved moral support, I decided.
Then, largely through the Internet, I started paying more attention to Dr. Paul and his unorthodox campaign. I caught a few interviews, read articles about him and his campaign and even read most of his position papers and many of his previous essays and speeches. And I quickly came to this conclusion:
Ron Paul believes what I believe and what most of the founders of this nation believed. Specifically, he believes in a vastly reduced role for the federal government and that the Constitution should be the litmus test for all legislative or judicial actions. His belief is that America was founded on - and achieved its greatness from - the concept of maximum liberty for the individual.
The Constitution, he constantly reminds us, was created to erect formidable barriers against the federal government assuming too much power over individuals’ lives.
It’s a four page (by al.com standards) endorsement. Read the rest here.
