There Oughta Be a Law (NOT!)

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

From the stupid legislation department:
A new bill in Mississippi would make it illegal for restaurants to serve obese customers.
It would allow health inspectors to revoke the licence of any restaurant that “repeatedly” feeds extremely overweight people, reports the Daily Telegraph.
Two-thirds of adult Mississippians are overweight and 30% obese, according to the latest federal figures.
The bill […]

For all of those Alabamians considering voting for Mitt Romney

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

1) His health care plan sucked.
2) His health care plan is now projected to have significant cost overruns.
3) His health care plan is “is virtually indistinguishable from the one proposed by Hillary Clinton.”
4) His health care plan put more people on the public dole.
5) Because of the combination of cost over runs and a state […]

Twiggy Claus is Coming to Town

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

In a new burst of political correctness, the new Santa Claus in Great Britain will be a healthy figure only Mike Huckabee or Hillary Clinton could love.
Santa is being told to shift the pounds before Christmas - because the obese saint is failing to set a “good example” for children.
The traditional children’s hero, best known […]

McCain Jumps on Board the Compassionate Conservative Bandwagon

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

John McCain is clearly as much of a compassionate conservative as Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani are. From the AmSpec blog:
A questioner named Jonathan (I didn’t get his full name) asked, “Should federal law supersede the will of the people in a given state when it comes to medical marijuana?”
McCain started chuckling. “The will […]

Attorney General King Tries to Stick It to Sex Toy Distributors

Monday, November 12th, 2007

When the Supreme Court refused to hear the Alabama sex toy case, the powers-to-be decided that the way to law was written in Alabama made it too difficult to prosecute business owners on intent-to-distribute charges.
The state law is “too vague to pass constitutional muster,” Vance ruled. He questioned the law’s definition of “substantial” in […]

Asymmetrical Medical Advice

Friday, November 9th, 2007

After stopping by a doc-in-a-box, Megan McArdle ponders:
I am solemnly informed that this is not the right way to get medical care; I should have a primary care physician who really knows my case well. But this does not actually describe any primary care physician I have ever had, who was reading off the chart […]

Liveblogging the GOP Debate

Sunday, October 21st, 2007

The typing may be awful, as I just impaled my hand with a spike from a chicken rotisserie. Don’t ask how it happened, but I haven’t even had a sip of alcohol (yet). Good thing my wife’s a doctor.
Pregame Show
The Frank Luntz/Jimmy the Greek focus group is really scared the Democrats will […]

Ron Paul Support: It’s Not All Just about the Iraq War

Friday, October 19th, 2007

As the word about Ron Paul is getting out, I’ve been running into more and more Ron Paul supporters who actually favor the war in Iraq.  Here are clips from two recent articles shedding light on support from people not necessarily motivated by Dr. Paul’s foreign policy position.
Anecdotally, of the ten or so key supporters […]

Government Managed Heathcare: A Glimpse Into the Future

Monday, October 15th, 2007

Here’s a recent CNN article which shows what the future will be like if Romney, Obama or Clinton are elected.
England has a two-tier dental care system with some dentists offering publicly subsidized treatment through the National Health Service and others performing more expensive private work.
But more than three-quarters of those polled said they had […]

Possible Surgeon General Warning: Government healthcare is dangerous to your health

Sunday, October 14th, 2007

Shortly after Ron Paul announced his intention to run for the Republican presidential nomination, my wife and I went out with a few DC area friends for drinks. One of the friends present was Norm Singleton, who is listed in my congressional directory as Ron Paul’s legislative director. He’s also a co-blogger at FreeLiberal.
We […]

Compassionate Conservatism Mitt Romney Style

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

Here’s Mitt Romney dealing with a medicinal marijuana patient the way most elected Republicans do. It’s worth noting that Giuliani has the same general opinion.
Presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani said Tuesday that people who want to legalize marijuana for medical purposes really just want to make the drug available to everyone.
“I believe the effort to […]

Let Freedom Buzz

Friday, October 5th, 2007

It’s not quite civil disobedience, but I’m sure Henry David Thoreau would have approved of the recent actions of Alabama sex toy shops. For those not aware, the US Supreme Court refused to hear a case about the sales of sex toys in Alabama and now the state Attorney General intends to start prosecuting […]

John Stossel on Universal Healthcare

Thursday, October 4th, 2007

Sometimes it seems that I’m the last man standing who is willing to take on the currently unpopular view that each person should choose his or her own healthcare destiny — and pay for it out of his or her own pocket. At least John Stossel has stepped up to the plate:
Candidates for […]

Supporting Ron Paul May Be The Only Winning GOP Choice

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007

A couple of sites recently asked the same general question.

Redstate: Now, if something untoward should happen, and another Republican should receive the nomination instead of the good Doctor, my question for you is: Will you support the Republican nominee against Hillary?**
National Review Online: Raising the question of how many Ron Paul supporters are truly Republicans… […]

Anniston Pravda on Socialized Healthcare

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

Speaking of SCHIP, it looks like the Anniston Star would rather promote New York values than Alabama values.
Yes, it is more complicated than that, but in the world of public opinion and public-opinion making, the Democrats will be the ones who will be labeled as the protectors of children’s health, not the president and not […]
